Here is a video with a counting song called ‘5 little monkeys’. Rhymes and songs are fantastic tools to teach numeracy skills together with a bunch of other skills, to young children. You could ask the questions ‘How many are left?’ ‘Can you take one away?’ ‘How many monkeys are there all together?’ Sing along and count down from 5. You can use your own toys to help count down too, taking one away each time.
Here is a maths activity which includes naming and sorting familiar objects into groups (apples, oranges and potatoes). We then count each group to see how many there are in order to compare the groups. Which group has more or less than the others? Which group has 3 objects? How do you know? How can you check there are 3? Have a go at sorting and comparing different groups of objects in your home!
