What is Forest School?

fs3

Forest School uses the outdoor environment to help all children learn. Children are helped to develop independence, improve their decision-making skills, and raise their self-esteem.

All learning is child led to accommodate individual learning styles and schemas, children are encouraged to make choices, and follow their own learning. The adult’s role is facilitative and enables observation and assessment of the learning taking place.

In an ideal world, children would be out in nature from their earliest months, it would be a way of life, outdoor experiences would be a golden thread running through childhood, adolescence and into parenthood, repeating the cycle.

How do we learn to live with the silences and contemplation that move us forward in our personal growth? How do we really help people to see themselves as their own most important resource?

Forest School is a journey to self. The young travellers need adults who are rooting for them, respecting them and their struggles, making it all possible, and ultimately letting them get on with it within safe boundaries.
